How to Corrupt a Democracy

First of all, I’m vaxxed with all three doses and I support the scientific approach to get rid of this pandemic. However, what I have been witnessing regarding the convoy, protests, and the government’s (lack of timely and proper) response is very concerning.

Even though the government finds the requests of the protesters unacceptable, the first step of mitigation should have been dialogue. However, the protestors were called a “fringe minority” before any attempt to hear their concerns and trying to find a middle way or at least developing a roadmap.

Instead, the government sat still and waited until it became unbearably disturbing for the community in Ottawa and harmful for the economy, and then invoked the Emergencies Act without any prior democratic attempt. This can certainly be defined as the “Tyranny of the Majority”, and this was not what I expected when I chose Canada as a skilled immigrant.

If the government starts to turn a deaf ear to the voices from the society regardless it’s coming from a “fringe minority”, and then try to suppress them with the power of an act that was designed for extreme situations, believe me, there is no going back! Who can be assured of their rights anymore? Who can guarantee that your voice will be heard if the government doesn’t want to listen to you?

It’s not only an issue of some truckers, or anti-vaxxers, or any other group that has different beliefs from yours, it’s a huge problem for all Canadians!
